The Notable Guitar: Knaggs Guitars
The Black Pearl (2014)
For our first Notable Guitar (and we expect there to be many more), we are presenting a one-of-a-kind instrument from Knaggs Guitars called The Black Pearl. Built in 2014 as part of the company’s Creation Series, these guitars are never to be replicated and are typically named after their inlay scheme.
When asked about the thinking behind the idea for the Creation Series, marketing director Peter Wolf explained, “We felt it would inspire potential buyers and collectors to get a one-of-a-kind instrument.” When asked if there were market considerations that suggested a probability of success, he said, “Not really. We had this idea for a while and finally went for it.”
While The Black Pearl took about a year to build, it was ultimately sold immediately. In addition, there have been 15 other guitars built for the Creation Series, so it is likely safe to say the collective instinct of luthier Joe Knaggs and marketer Peter Wolf was probably all the market research needed to ensure success.
